One Direction

Archive: February, 2012

Only yesterday our Gazza tweeted his congratulations to The Wanted on their success in the US charts, and today it’s the turn of One Direction to get a big-up from the X Factor judge.

“Another big congrats to @onedirection on their US success.America loving our boy bands.Maybe I’ll get me cycling shorts back on!! #ornot”

As well as the previous news that “Glad You Came” reached number 1 on the US iTunes charts, the boys have now gone one better and entered the Billboard Hot 100 Top 3, and in doing so have become the highest charting UK boyband, EVER!

Well done TW! The record that One Direction broke 2 weeks ago didn’t last long! ;)

Those older Directioners out there might remember Take That got to number 7 in the US charts with their hit “Back For Good” – “WANT YOU BACK… WANT YOU BACK… YOU KNOW I WANT YOU BACK FOR GOOOD!” – sorry… ;)

The current success of both 1D and The Wanted is terrific news for the UK music scene, and especially for UK boybands.

All we need next is for JLS to have a top ten hit!

Our hearts are with Zayn Malik this evening after it was announced he will be leaving the current US tour to fly home and be with his family, after hearing that a close family relative had died.

Harry Styles tweeted earlier today: “Zayn has suffered a loss in his family & has had to go home for a few days so won’t be at our next shows in the US… Our thoughts are with him and his family at this sad time.”

Within minutes of Harry’s tweet, Twitter was awash with sympathy for Zayn, and a trending topic #StayStrongZayn made the top lists.

Currently it’s unclear how long Zayn will be gone for and whether he will be flying back, but we hope his family all pulls together at this tough time.

Zayn is yet to comment on the loss, but earlier retweeted a fan’s message: “God has no Phone, but I talk to him. He has no Facebook, but he is still my friend. He does not have a twitter, but I still follow him.”

Zayn, take time to grieve naturally, and don’t rush back too soon. The rest of One Direction will be waiting for you with open arms, and the Directioner family offers you their every sympathy.

Be strong.

One Direction superstar Liam Payne got through to the Judge’s House stage of X Factor in 2008, but was later rejected by Simon Cowell after he decided that Liam wasn’t ready for the live show.

Phew! What a great decision by Simon!

If it wasn’t for that decision, Liam wouldn’t be in the band now, and maybe One Direction might not exist – what a horrible thought!

Thankfully, Liam came back to the X Factor two years later in 2010, and we all know the story from there.

Right now, there’s an argument for One Direction being the biggest boyband in the WORLD.

Speaking with the Birmingham Mail, Liam said: “I agree with the decision now,” Liam told The Birmingham Mail. I was too young. Some things are meant to happen and this is one of those things. I was meant to do it in a band. I have made four new best friends out of it so I am happy as Larry.”

Larry Stylinson, right Liam?

On the back of the news that another British boyband export has just hit No.1 in the USA iTunes charts, Lily Allen has took to Twitter to give her opinion on the overseas success of One Direction, tweeting: “its amazing how well One Direction are being received across the pond ,no ? Good luck to em I say , seem like good lads.”

Harry Styles noticed the tweet and replied back, saying: “thanks for the support Lily! Hopefully meet you sometime soon, hope you’re well .x”

And only last week, Jessie J got herself into a spot of bother over a mis-read tweet, when she re-tweeted something that a random fan had said about The Brits:

“Each of the really c**p boyband OneD spoke at The Brits but they cut 6 times grammy winner Adele short. Really? #TheBrits @jessiejofficial.”

Jessie replied back saying: “Why am I tagged? I didn’t cut her off :(

A lot of Directioners took the tweet to mean that Jessie J was calling the band rubbish, and she was forced to defend herself, tweeting: “When did I say 1D were c**p? Stop reading into things on twitter people. Sheeeet! They are a great boyband. Congrats on your win boys :D x”

Oh the problems that Twitter can cause eh! Whatever did we do without it!

One Direction popped by the offices of Canadian TV channel Much Music for an interview yesterday, whilst THOUSANDS of screaming fans gathered outside the building.

Toronto officials were actually forced to close down the street outside the Much Music HQ when the boyband stopped by to give their first outing on Canadian TV.

The video below shows the sheers amount of fans outside, and when the boys start walking down the corridor the fans screams are deafening, with one presenter herself saying: “I have been waiting my whole life to see something like this”.

MuchMusic later announced that they received the largest amount of ticket requests EVER for the show, over 17,000 calls in total!

Yesterday, Niall said on Twitter:  “Omg , @muchmusic was crazzzzzyy, the maddest its been, sorry we couldn’t stay longer, it was just soo crazy, thanks for having us!”, going on to say: “That was loud, really loud”

1D also gave interviews to the press inside The Ballroom Bowling Bar, and they joked with some lucky fans who had managed to track them down.

Watch the Much Music interviews in full below…

It’s a well known fact that Zayn Malik is partial to the odd cigarette or two, but now a fan video has supposedly caught Niall Horan in the act, with both boys being filmed outside a Toronto restaraunt called The Ballroom.

It’s hard to see exactly what’s going on in the vid. It looks like Zayn is definitely puffing on a ciggie, but the verdict is still out on exactly what Niall is doing.

Take a look at the video below and make your minds up…

What do you reckon? Smoking or not smoking?

Boybands, you just can’t get enough of them, and right now two of the UK’s biggest groups are on the right path for conquering the US market – a historically notoriously difficult area for British bands to crack.

JLS, previously our biggest boyband (prior to the recent success of One Direction) have never really broke American shores, and Take That never did either, despite having a hugely successful career over here.

The first song to be released by The Wanted in the States is proving a surprise hit, has been taken on by radio stations in all states, and entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 23.

One Directions first US single, “What Makes You Beautiful” is also in the same chart right now and debuted at number 28, despite having little radio play so far. Granted, the major radio stations are surely set to add the song to their playlists, so a higher position is to be expected soon.

With The Wanted playing up to the older teenage crowd whilst One Direction cater for the younger masses, it seems both bands have got the 2012 world of boybands sewn up, and as well as other exports like Adele, Coldplay and Jessie J, things may have never been rosier for the British music scene.

Keep it up guys! We might be a purely One Direction fansite but we support all the Brits!

Elsewhere, in stricly 1D land, Caroline Flack was apparently banned from speaking to Harry Styles at last weeks Brit Awards.

According to the Daily Star, Miss Flack was furious about being told to say away from Harry, and was allegedly overheard saying: “Why aren’t I allowed to speak to him? Why can’t I speak to him?”

Caroline took to Twitter after the event saying: “Note to some people/mags … You are still speculating over something that clearly finished a while ago… Leave it now.. Please.”

One Direction are having a well-earned break tonight after performing three gigs in a row on their debut US “Better With You” tour. According to most reports, the boys are going down a storm so far, and many observers are even commenting how they are outshining the headline act, Big Time Rush.

Controversially, some fans have even been seen to leave the concerts after 1D have finished performing their seven-song setlist.

Here’s a couple of reviews of last nights gig:

Toronto.com Review:

“During the Toronto premiere performances for both acts in the ACC’s concert bowl setting, it was One Direction who came out to the biggest, most natural response, with the estimated 3,500 predominantly female audience members raising the roof on pure decibel power at the first appearance of Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis (really, are second names even necessary at this point?).”

Mr. Will-W Review:

“Hot off the success of their BRIT Awards win last week in the category of Best British Single with What Makes You Beautiful, One Direction celebrated their Victory to happy cheers from the crowd, who for the first time tonight, were graced by the Band’s presence in Toronto.  Performing a fantastic version ofKings of Leon‘s Use Somebody and zipping through hits like One Thing and Album Title Track, Up All Night, their energy was absolutely infectious despite performing only to Backing Tracks – no bells and whistles.  The only complaint that could be heard among the sold-out crowd was that their 30-minute Set was far too short.  Forgivable I suppose, considering that their stateside Debut Up All Night won’t be in-stores till March 13, 2012 via Sony Music Canada.”

Toronto Flash Mob

Ok, here’s something pretty damn amazing. Following on from the One Direction Flash Mobs that we’ve seen in Australia and other countries, yesterday it was Toronto, Canada’s turn – and how they did it. Check out the choreographed moves. Amazing!

Back to the gig, here’s a fan video from last night, with 1D singing “What Makes You Beautiful”. The angle it’s shot at gives a nice perspective to the show.

Elsewhere, Harry Styles was talking to The Diary about their new Brit Award, and he said: “I’ll put it on display in my toilet. You don’t want to put it somewhere too show-offy, like in the hall or on your mantelpiece, so if you put it in the bathroom everyone’s going to have to go in there at some point anyway!”

Good thinking Harry, we like your style!

90′s megabands New Kids On The Block & the Backstreet Boys have given the latest kids on the block a few words of advice on how best to crack the US market.

Whether they need it or not is another thing, as they seem to be doing a fine job of it at the moment, however Joey McIntyre, singer in NKOTB said: “Even though the UK and England are big, it still sort of has a small town feel”.

“That’s why you guys love your artists so much but boybands are so personality driven that sometimes it’s about connecting with that and if the American girls don’t connect with that swagger, it’s hard.”

One Direction stand a good chance of riding the current British wave of internation stars such as Adele, Coldplay and Jessie J, but they need to add some attitude, Joey said.

“They won’t be able to rely on their music like Coldplay and Adele have. Whereas if it’s rock music, if it’s Coldplay, it’s about the music”, he added.

NKOTB were one of the biggest boybands of the 1990′s and have been touring all over the world with the Backstreet Boys on the co-named NKOTBSB Tour. The tour has so far visited North America & Canada and will be visiting Europe, Australia and finally Asia this year.

One Direction are playing their third gig on their “Better With You” tour in Toronto tonight.

One Direction paid a visit to Detroit last night on the second stage of their joint US tour with Big Time Rush, and it was another sell-out gig with fans-a-plenty going mad at the slightest sight of the boys.

We’ve been scouring YouTube looking for good fan videos, and here’s a decent one of One Direction singing “More Than This”:

Fresh from selling all of the tickets on their UK & Ireland tour next year (and pocketing a whopping £18 million in the process), the band have a further 10 dates to play on their tour, culminating in a performance in New York on March 9th.

Their debut US single, “What Makes You Beautiful”, was the highest first song for a UK act in the US Billboard chart for nearly 14 years. The song entered the at number 28 and sold 132,000 downloads in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan.

A higher chart position is expected when it gets released in full.

Elsewhere, it seems there is another “One Direction” on US shores, and they’re quite keen to lay claim to the name. We can’t imagine our favourite five boys having to change their name to something else – (does anyone remember our April fool from last year – “Ooosh Potato” ?). We laughed anyway, even if you didn’t. LOL.

Hopefully any legal issues will be sorted out soon and it will all be forgotten about :)

Here’s two great fan videos of One Direction’s opening night on the “Better With You” tour in Chicago.

The first is the boys singing “Up All Night”, and the lucky fan is right at the front of the audience. It’s almost like being there!

The second vid is the beautifully moving song “Moments”, written by none other than Ed Sheeran…

How good are they! And what a reception the US fans are giving our boys ;)

Despite extra dates being added for One Direction’s Uk & Ireland tour next year, hundreds of tickets are now available at hugely inflated prices on ticket re-selling sites such as Viagogo & Seatwave.

The subject of a Channel 4 documentary this week, Viagogo has come under fire for taking tickets away from fans, and selling them on at double the prices and more.

A quick search of both sites reveals tons of listings for events all around the country, and the prices are a lot more than the original ticket price.

Here’s a couple of selected tweets from angry fans:

@STYLATORARMY
why are people selling 1D tickets for like £200 when they were only about £30 to start with? what a rip off

@onedirectionxo_
it disgusts me that people buy tickets and re-sell them for hundreds of pounds. WHY WHY WHY

After the initial set of tickets sold out in minutes, extra dates were added, and the band sold 500,000 tickets in 2 hours according to the latest reports. One official from Ticketmaster said: “We’ve not seen demand like this for a very long time!”

Their official Twitter account posted: “We are adding more dates and shows as quick as we can! Keep trying guys!! Already more added to Manchester, London, Birmingham and more 1DHQ.”

Twitter itself was besieged by discussions about the concert’s and nearly half of the trending topics were to do with One Direction at one point.

The 1D boys have only been on American shores for just over a day now, and they’re already popping up all over the place giving as many fans as possible chances to see them.

They appeared in the ONE DIRECTION in the 103.5 KISS FM Chicago Coca-Cola Lounge and answered fan questions as well as singing the first aired US performance of “What Makes You Beautiful” and we’ve got the full video below:

Holy American accents Batman, we’re impressed!

They arrived at the Chicago O’Hare airport little over a day earlier, and not surprisingly were greeted by the usual hoo-haa and fanfare – and were quickly ushered through the airport to their waiting transport.

We’ve found a little video of them arriving:

There’s just no hiding for these five boys anymore – are they safe anywhere in the world?

That night in Chicago they performed the first date on their “Better With You” tour with Big Time Rush, and it looks like the fans were loving them, judging from the two videos below:

We don’t know about you, but we just love it whenever we see Niall strumming away on his guitar. Oh the talent!

Hardcore One Direction fans have been queuing for up to 40 hours in order to purchase tickets for the 2013 gigs, announced this Tuesday.

Tickets go on sale at 9am tomorrow morning and are expected to sell out within minutes if not seconds, and many fans have been queuing since yesterday – with some even camping out to ensure they get what they want.

The entrance to the MEN Arena’s box office has become a makeshift campsite with hundreds of fans already in place, and arena bosses have said the concert has generated the same level of excitement as Take That & Peter Kay, saying: “As the majority of tickets are now sold oline, it’s an incredibly rare occurrence these days for fans to camp out overnight.”

One fan, Pal Kamara Munroe, 17, from Manchester, said: “We have got quilts and blankets and our pyjamas and sleeping bags. I would freeze for One Direction – they are so worth it.”

Louis Tomlinson has offered words of advice for any fans camping out fans, stating: “Whatever you do just be safe and don’t take any risks.Your best bet is just trying to call Ticketmaster and try to be one of the first callers”.

Sheffield Arena Marketing Manager Simon Bailey assured fans that tickets will go on-sale online, on-the-phone and in-person at the exact same time, saying, “We have general advice to customers who want to purchase tickets at the Arena. The promoter has also set some terms and conditions -it’s a maximum of six tickets per person and under-14s must be accompanied by an adult of over 18″.

Ok, please stop crying – they’ll be back soon! (Well towards the end of April actually).

Yes One Direction have left British shores once again and have flown out to the USA for the start of their tour with Big Time Rush. They’ll be performing 10 dates all across America and Canada before popping to the other side of the world for 3 more dates in Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane.

As well as the triple outing in Oz, they are rumoured to be performing at the Logie Awards in Melbourne on April 15th (think Australia’s version of the Brit Awards). Maybe they’ll pick up another award there?

Speaking about their forthcoming trip to Oz, Zayn Malik said: “We can’t wait to come Down Under and meet everyone that has supported us”.

Harry Styles also said: “You guys have been amazing and have supported us since day one so thank you”.

Last night on Facebook, Zayn posted the following: “So we’re going away for a bit now, but we will be back soon! gna miss all of our amazing uk fans :) Zayn xx”

Boo hoo hoooo, we’ve got a tear in our eye!

Here’s a funny interview backstage with the boys after the Brit Awards to soften the blow :)

Speaking with reporters yesterday (February 22nd), Simon Cowell was asked about his expectations for groups on the second series of US X Factor, and also whether he though a group could win the competition.

He said: “When we started the show in the UK, it took a few seasons before good groups emerged. It’s interesting that we’re talking this week because One Direction, a group who were third on X Factor UK in 2010, are about to literally explode in America.”

He went further to say: “There is even a chance their album may debut at number one when it’s released. I think that in itself will start making the point that groups can do well in these competitions.”

The first series of the show in the US failed to live up to expectations, so Cowell needs to make sure the second corrects the flaws of the first, with many feeling the presenters on the show needed work – and it has recently been announced that the show will now have two hosts.

Speaking more about One Direction, the 52 year old media mogul said: “I stand by what I said in a press conference last year that I think a group can win this show. We’re trying to encourage better groups to audition and you’ll see a significant difference in the quality of the groups this year, I’m absolutely convinced by that.”

He was then asked specifically how a group such as One Direction was different from the rest of the crowd, stating: “We put them together. I made a decision that they hadn’t quite made it or weren’t ready as solo artists, and the groups that year, I’ve got to admit, were terrible.

“We made a decision on the day we should experiment and put these five guys together. They just felt right. The minute we saw them all standing there we had a feeling it would work. But to be fair, it all came from them; they had all the ideas, they knew the kind of group they wanted to be.”

Cowell continued talking about 1D, saying: “We gave them a lot of latitude, we never hyped the group or pushed it, it happened in its own momentum in America.”

Simon finally added: “It does prove the point that I think we’re entering a very exciting phase again in pop music and I think One Direction will be huge this year. Importantly for the American show it will attract hopefully the next ‘N Sync or Backstreet Boys or Destiny’s Child, because there aren’t that many groups at the moment doing well in America. This is a massive opportunity for them and [allowing groups to audition] does separate us from the other [singing] competitions.”

Proud words from Mr Cowell!

1D released their debut US single “What Makes You Beautiful” only last week, and have now broken a 14 year old sales record, selling 132,000 in the first week of sales, according to Nielsen Sound Scan.

The song is the biggest seller since The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” back in 1998, and the last two UK acts to chart higher are Jimmy Ray (who?) and the Spice Girls back in 1998 and 1997 respectively.

The accolade is a terrific launchpad for future USA success, and comes despite their US record label Columbia not even starting pushing for radio airplay – which instead starts from next week.

WMYB peaked at number 9 on the iTunes US chart.

Good on ya lads!

After their recent triumph at the Brit Awards, 1D posted the following video as thank-you to their fans:

[UPDATE: Click here for more One Direction Tickets information]

So are you camping out this Friday night, ready to pounce in the morning for some ONE DIRECTION TICKETS? No?

Well if you’re planning to set your alarm for early Saturday morning ready to get online at 9am, you’ll need to know which websites to go to. There’s three main sites that you’re best off trying:

Last time tickets for a 1D tour went on sale, they all sold out in about 2 MINUTES, so it will be pretty hectic. Be prepared to keep trying, and be patient in the online queue (if you close your browser down or keep refreshing you might hinder yourself).

There may be a few more sites that are selling tickets, but these are the three main ones who have a larger allocation and thus you’ll stand a better chance.

As fans of One Direction, we’ll be trying to get some for ourselves so wish us luck! Hopefully there will be more than enough to go round so all the Directioners who want a ticket can get one.

If we are lucky and get a few tickets, we just don’t think we’ll be able to wait until next year!

After one of the biggest nights in One Direction’s short careers, Simon Cowell took to twitter to show his opinion of the award, saying: “Fantastic news. Congrats @onedirection I am very proud of you”

1D beat much-fancied competition including The Wanted, Adele, JLS, Example, Ed Sheeran amongst others to pick up their first Brit Award, and the boys gave thanks to all their fans for voting for them.

Backstage afterwards, they joked that they were going to struggle with just one trophy between them, and Niall Horan said: “We have to break the award into five. Or we need to photocopy it.”

Harry then gave us a hint as to a future collaboration : “We would love to work with Adele.” – Wouldn’t that be great!

Later during the ceremony James Corden greeted the boys at their table, admiring their stack of beer bottles and champagne, and making a quip about Harry’s taste for a cougar, saying: “Can you confirm or deny the rumours that you’ll be stepping out with Denise Welsh?

After a long pause, Harry replied: “It’s true”, before Corden came back with: “He loves a loose woman”.

Oh how we lol’d ;)

Despite being amongst more highly favoured artists such as Adele and Ed Sheeran, One Direction triumphed in the “Best British Single” category in tonights Brit Awards.

Walking on to the stage to collect their awards, all five boys looked genuinely shocked, and they all took turns to thank their family, their management and most of all their fans.

When their name was read out by Tinie Tempah, the crowd went wild, and Louis took first turn on the microphone, before handing it over to Harry. Watch them below:

It was only back in August last year that “What Makes You Beautiful” was first released, and having been released only last week in the USA & Canada, One Direction are now well on their way to being worldwide superstars.

Well done boys, we’re proud of you! Now come back next year and win even more awards!
